The Office for Combating Drugs of the Government of the Republic of Serbia in cooperation with the UNODC in Serbia organized on 20-22 May 2019 an event named “UNODC Workshop for Policy Makers related to Nature, Prevention and Treatment of Drug Use Disorders”.

The aforementioned Workshop was attended by the representatives of all relevant stakeholders participating in policy making for combating drugs, in implementation of prevention and treatment of the addictions. 

UNODC Workshop for policy makers related to nature, prevention and treatment of drug use disorders is a program established in 2016, as a part of the UNODC activities in providing support for member states and their efforts to make humane, efficient and evidence-based prevention for drug abuse and treatment services and for drug abuse. 

Training package was specially adapted to policy makers with key responsibilities for decision making in the fields of healthcare, interior, education, justice and other relevant social sectors. It is based on education package developed by the UNODC “Manual for the Training of Policymakers on the Nature, Prevention and Treatment of Drug Use Disorders”, defined in accordance with international experts in order to adequately respond to challenges of problems resulting from psychoactive substances abuse. 

The main goal of this interactive workshop was to define concrete evidence-based steps that would contribute to strengthening of social cohesion of the substances abusers and their families into the community, by breaking barriers and prejudice surrounding them, then to define multisector working plan for improving and strengthening national response to drug abuse problems in accordance with the international practice, as well as proposing certain methodology steps for decision makers in development and integration of preventive and curative evidence-based strategies. 

All participants were given certificates by the UNODC at the end of the Workshop, which was evaluated as a very successful one by the organizers.
